Introduction

Produced by the Royal Australian Air Force, Wings: Official Magazine of the RAAF, was first published by the Directorate of Public Relations in April 1943. The purpose of the publication was to boost morale amongst Australian service personnel serving during the Second World War. Over the next three years a total of 71 issues were produced over a series of six volumes. The magazine was released at regular fortnightly intervals before moving to a monthly publication schedule beginning with Volume 6, Number 1 in November 1945.

In early 1946 the production of Wings was transferred to the RAAF Association (now the Air Force Association). The magazine continues to be produced to this day in both hard copy and digital forms with Volume 74 commencing in Autumn 2022. Further information about the current publication, including subscription options, can be found on the Wings Magazine website.

An unofficial index of the first six volumes - those produced by the RAAF between April 1943 and March 1946 - has been compiled by Daniel J. Leahy and is in the process of being reproduced below for research purposes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Wings magazines published during the Second World War are products of their time. Some of them may depict imagery or use terms expressing some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace. The reproduction of some of this material within this index does not represent the views of those involved in this website's creation, nor those of its contributors or supporters. Magazine cover images and article titles are being presented here, as they were originally published, for archival and reference purposes only.
